Reiki students often ask me how I explain what Reiki is to those who do not understand metaphysics. So was the case with my last Reiki second-degree class.
I look for the language that would mirror the level of understanding of my inquiry. If they are Christian, I will tell them what we do is similar to the “laying on of hands” like Jesus did, which is placing love into the body. If they are agnostic, I do not speak of energy or channeling light. I merely tell them that Reiki allows us to see life from a different perspective. By opening to a new view of a challenging circumstance, stress is released and balance is restored.
I never try to convince anyone of the values of applying the love of Reiki to a situation or body. I present what I have seen it do for me and for others, and stop there. I inform them that I do not fully understand why transferring Reiki into the body makes changes, but it does for me and I have seen it work for many others over the 20+ years I have been giving Reiki. Keep your explanation simple. Plant the seed, and it just might grow (as did my bleeding hearts.)
In the light,
Marnie
