Years ago, when I told my real estate agent about the changes in my life, i.e., my divorce, I did not realize that I needed to stop negative thoughts from coloring my days to release stress from divorce.
I shared a brief explanation with her but found that I became more involved in the story beyond the facts she needed to know as the conversation advanced. Being a concerned friend, she probed deeper as I continued to voice my disturbing story.
Because I let anger fill my world, within minutes:
- My body started becoming very shaky
- My breathing became difficult
- My chest shook
- I questioned, “Am I having a heart attack?”
- Fear came in as it wondered what was going on
I soon realized that going into the details of my divorce was stressing my body.
Rehashing the stories on auto-rewind in my head never served my friend or me. I needed to listen to my body and STOP.
In meditation, I cleared the energy of my negative thoughts so that I would not trigger my emotions again by discussing the trauma.
How to stop negative thoughts and release stress from any situation
Your body is a message center. It’s trying to Remember this when you’re on overload.

Stop recalling the story and giving it your energy
- don’t bring it up in conversations
- when you remember disturbing incidents, say out loud STOP
- Release the negative words out of your body to release stress with these steps:
- Color each word and give them a shape
- Look in your body to see where the unkind words are stuck
- Imagine moving them and replacing them with a pink heart
- Call in forgiveness for yourself and your former partner
- Change your perception, and see the good in your life NOW
- Recall one person that makes you smile
- Think of an activity you enjoy
- Notice how good your life feels to be free from …
- Ask the Universe to whisper compassionate messages to you
As I processed my anger, my energy changed, gifting me with an invitation to lunch with people who honored and respected me.
